శ్యాం రావ్ హర్నూర్ గారికి ఘన నివాళి

జర్నలిజం ఒక గమ్మత్తైన వృత్తి. బుర్రలో గుజ్జు లేకపోయినా... దీన్ని అడ్డం పెట్టుకుని తెగ సంపాయించి మేథావులుగా పోజు కొడుతూ బతికేస్తున్న అధికసంఖ్యాక మహానుభావులు ఒక రకం. నిజంగానే ఈ వృత్తిని పవిత్రంగా భావించి జీవితాంతం నికార్సైన జర్నలిస్టులుగా బతికిన వారు కొందరే అయినా ఇతరుల మది పొరల్లో కలకాలం నిలిచి పోతారు.

ఈ రెండో రకానికి చెందిన వారిలో ఒకరు శ్యాం రావ్ హర్నూర్ గారు అని సీనియర్ జర్నలిస్టుల వల్ల తెలుస్తున్నది. ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన వార్తా సంస్థ ప్రెస్ ట్రస్ట్ ఆఫ్ ఇండియా (పీ టీ ఐ) లో సుదీర్ఘకాలం పనిచేసిన ఆయన జనవరి 12 న 87 ఏళ్ళ వయసులో మరణించారు. వారి గొప్పతనాన్ని స్ఫురించుకుంటూ... సీనియర్ జర్నలిస్టు ములుగు సోమశేఖర్ గారు తన ఫేస్ బుక్ పేజీ లో ఘన నివాళి అర్పించారు. 1952 లో పీ టీ ఐ లో చేరడానికి ముందు... హర్నూర్ గారు రయ్యత్, ఇమ్రోజ్, సెంటినల్ అనే పత్రికలలో పనిచేసారు. ఇందులో మొదటి రెండు పత్రికలకు సంపాదకుడిగా వ్యవహరించిన షోయబుల్లా ఖాన్ రాజాకార్ల చేతిలో హత్యకు గురైన సంగతి జర్నలిస్టులకు తెలుసు.
సీనియర్ డిప్యూటీ ఎడిటర్ హోదాలో బిజినెస్ లైన్ పత్రిక బ్యూరో చీఫ్ గా పనిచేసున్న సోమశేఖర్  గారికి పీ టీ ఐ లో కూడా పనిచేసిన అనుభవం ఉంది. ఆ నివాళిని యథాతథంగా మీ కోసం అందిస్తున్నాం. వారికి థాంక్స్.
A Tribute
Sham Rao Harnur, the former Manager of the PTI, who passed away on Tuesday morning was one of the last of the complete wire service Journalists from Hyderabad. He was a gentleman, soft spoken and thorough professional. He was among my first bosses in Journalism. In good measure, he was instrumental in encouraging me with reporting on virtually all subjects as a rookie reporter at PTI in the mid-1980s. 
The 87 year old Sham Rao was a linguist, who could read Urdu, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi which helped him and also the agency in exhaustive coverage of events from the city. He was an efficient man-manager and loved to wear his coats and formals to events and assignments. He commanded respect in the political circles with CMs like Marri Chenna Reddy, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, Vengala Rao etc on first name basis. Leaders like Rosaiah (governor of TN now), V Hanumantha Rao, Quereshi etc would often come to the office. 

For four decades, starting from the formation of the combined AP, he served the agency with commitment and guided its growth. With PTI being an office with home attached, he was always at hand when any development took place. For most Cong(I) leaders and State Governors, a report from PTI was a must to reach Delhi and high command, and hence the agency was the focal point of lot of action during those times. Sham Rao was seldom swayed by political leanings as he stuck to factual, thoroughly sourced reportage. 

This highly non-controversial Journalist, however, had his share of controversy, when he put out a `scoop', that nearly a dozen MLAs with NTR were shifting to Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, during the 1984 political drama that saw NTR being dethroned for nearly 30 days and dramatically returning to power. The story raised national attention and was debated for sometime. Sham Rao was quick in reporting, fast in typing and could get his team to cover events extensively. It was under his stewardship that me, Dinesh Sharma and G Rajaraman, all classmates in Journalism from Osmania University had the unique opportunity to work and learn the finer aspects of agency Journalism. Proud that Dinesh is an accomplished Science Journalist and Rajaraman an acclaimed Sports Scribe in the country now.

 PTI provided the opportunities and to good measure, I shall be indebted to Sham Rao Harnur for a good part of all the initial learning, assignments and political contacts to whatever progress I have made in the profession. He retired in 1990 in the true sense. Leading a peaceful life away from the media. His son, Sridhar a fellow Nizamian became a crime reporter before moving on to the US. His brother, RV Harnur is a well known News Editor and a close relative P Vaman Rao, a noted Journalist.
